Before Your First Visit to CFRC‑MAIN (Coleman): What to Bring, What to Leave Home, and How to Prepare

Before you plan the drive to CFRC‑MAIN (Coleman), confirm you're actually eligible to visit. The Bureau of Prisons only allows visits after the inmate adds you to their approved visiting list and you've been cleared. If you're not cleared yet - or if the person you're visiting is newly arrived or recently transferred and their list isn't set up - showing up in person means a wasted trip.

Dress code trips people up more than almost anything else. Keep it simple and conservative. The BOP doesn't allow revealing or see-through clothing - that includes short shorts, halter tops, bathing suits, and anything sheer. Spandex is usually a problem too. Clothing that resembles what inmates wear, like khaki or green military-style items, can also get you turned away. Staff make the call on the spot, so if you're second-guessing an outfit, change before you leave home.

Pack light. Treat the visiting area as a "no electronics, no valuables" zone. The Bureau's prohibited-object list includes weapons, explosives, drugs and other intoxicants, and currency. It also covers cameras of any type, recording equipment, telephones, radios, pagers, and other electronic devices. Bring any of that onto Bureau grounds and you're looking at delays at best - denied entry at worst. Leave it all secured at home or in your car before you step onto the property.

Expect to be searched. By entering - or even attempting to enter - Bureau grounds or facilities, you're considered to have consented to searches under Bureau policy and federal regulations (28 C.F.R. Part 511). Refuse a search and staff can turn you away. The easiest approach: arrive with as little as possible and follow staff directions without pushback.

Once you're inside, expect supervision. The visiting area may be monitored to maintain security and order - including restrooms in the visiting area. If you're unsure what's allowed during the visit, ask the officer rather than guessing.

Visiting-room behavior: Visits are expected to be quiet, orderly, and dignified. If you or the inmate isn’t acting appropriately, the visiting room officer can require you and/or the inmate to leave.

Before you travel, double-check the current visiting schedule for CFRC‑MAIN. BOP institutions generally offer visiting hours on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays - sometimes weekdays too - but exact days and hours vary by facility and can change. Confirm the schedule ahead of time so you don't show up on the wrong day or miss the check-in window.
