How to Visit Facility
Visiting is usually straightforward once you handle two things: get approved to visit, and confirm the schedule before you travel. Use the steps and quick checks below to avoid a wasted trip.
The BOP welcomes visitors, but read the facility's visiting regulations before you go. If you're planning travel, also check for any state or local travel advisories that could affect your trip.
Even if you've visited before, visits can be limited on short notice. The Warden can restrict or cancel visiting for safety and security reasons, including severe weather or other incidents that disrupt normal operations.
By law, an inmate is entitled to at least four hours of visiting time per month. Many facilities offer more, but four hours is the guaranteed minimum. Keep that baseline in mind when you're planning.
You cannot visit until two things are true: the inmate has added you to their approved visiting list, and the BOP has cleared you. Make sure both approvals are complete before you build plans around a specific date.
- Get approved to visit: You can only visit after the inmate puts you on their visiting list and you’re cleared by the BOP.
- Confirm the schedule before you leave: Call the institution to confirm the visiting schedule before you depart at 603-342-4000.
- Review rules and plan for interruptions: Read the facility’s visiting regulations and check any state or local travel advisories before you go. Keep in mind the Warden may restrict or cancel visiting for safety and security reasons, such as severe weather or an operational incident.
- Plan around monthly visit time: If you’re trying to fit in multiple visits, remember inmates are entitled to at least four hours of visiting time per month, then schedule accordingly.
