Where to Send Money for Someone at FCI Tallahassee, and How It Reaches Their Commissary

3 min read Verified from official sources

Stop: Do not send money using FCI Tallahassee’s facility mailing address. Mailed funds must be addressed to a processing center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mailed funds cannot go to FCI Tallahassee's address. Federal facilities route all mailed money through a central processing center in Des Moines, Iowa. Send it to the institution address instead, and you're almost guaranteed delays that are completely avoidable.

The money you send goes into a commissary account maintained for the person in custody. It works like a simple bank account: deposits from family, friends, or other sources are held there, and the inmate draws from that balance to make commissary purchases.

If you use MoneyGram, formatting the account number correctly is the single biggest thing to get right. Enter the inmate's eight-digit register number (no spaces or dashes) followed immediately by their last name. So it looks like this: 12345678DOE.

MoneyGram also asks for a Receive Code when depositing to a federal inmate. For all BOP facilities, including FCI Tallahassee, that code is 7932.

  • Confirm you have the inmate’s eight-digit register number (8 digits, no spaces, no dashes)
  • Enter the last name exactly as it appears in BOP records
  • Combine them with no spacing for the Account Number (example format: 12345678DOE)
  • Use MoneyGram Receive Code 7932

How fast the money posts depends on when you send it. MoneyGram transfers made between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. EST typically hit the inmate's account within 2 to 4 hours. Send after 9:00 p.m. EST, and the funds post at 7:00 a.m. EST the next morning.

  1. Wait out the full posting window - If you sent it between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. EST, allow up to 4 hours. If you sent it after 9:00 p.m. EST, wait until after 7:00 a.m. EST the next morning.
  2. Recheck the exact entries you submitted - Make sure the Account Number was the 8-digit register number followed immediately by the last name, with no spaces or dashes.
  3. Use your MoneyGram receipt to follow up - If the timing window has passed, contact MoneyGram with your transaction information so they can locate the payment.

Quick save: Double-check the inmate’s register number and last name formatting before you send, and do not mail money to FCI Tallahassee’s address. Mailed funds must go to the Des Moines, Iowa processing center.

  • Do not mail funds to the FCI Tallahassee facility address (mail must be addressed to the Des Moines, Iowa processing center)
  • Use the inmate’s eight-digit register number (no spaces, no dashes)
  • Add the inmate’s last name immediately after the register number (example: 12345678DOE)
  • Use MoneyGram Receive Code 7932
