Sending Packages to Juveniles & What Programs Are Available: A Guide for Families
If you have a juvenile in Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) custody, two questions probably top your list: how do you send approved packages, and what programs are available while they're inside? Here's what GDC says about juvenile status, package ordering limits, and key services.
Under GDC policy, juveniles are individuals convicted of designated felonies before age 17. They can only be housed at certain facilities, which means the rules you'll follow (including package rules and available services) depend on where they're assigned.
As an approved visitor, you can place orders for a juvenile offender to receive property items like shoes, clothing, cosmetics, and other approved goods. The key limit is straightforward: only one package per month may be ordered.
- ✓ State Prisons and Integrated Treatment Facilities (ITFs): up to $100 per offender or 15 lbs. per package
- ✓ Probation Detention Centers: up to $50 per offender or 7 lbs. per package
- ✓ If multiple orders are placed for the same offender, they will be consolidated into one package, and the final package still cannot exceed the limits above
All package orders go through Union Supply, the vendor GDC uses to receive and fulfill orders placed by family and friends. So even though the package is for your loved one at a GDC facility, Union Supply processes the order under GDC rules.
Start with the official order forms on the Georgia Inmate Package website. These forms list every item pre-approved by GDC, so you'll know exactly what's allowed. Once you fill out the form, your order is received and fulfilled through Union Supply.
GDC offers a range of programs and services for juveniles, and in some cases, juveniles may have access to opportunities not available to the general population. The services GDC lists include counseling programs, chaplaincy, library services, and recreational services. Academic education and higher education options are available, along with vocational education and on-the-job training. Medical and mental health services are also provided. Performance Incentive Credit (PIC) is another listed program area for juveniles.
PIC (Performance Incentive Credit): Once a juvenile turns 18, they may be able to accumulate points toward a reduced prison stay. Eligibility is determined by the State Board of Pardons and Parole.
