Before Your First Visit to Cherokee County Jail: Scheduling & Preparation Checklist
Your first visit to Cherokee County Jail goes smoother when you book early and know which visit type works for you. Use this checklist to schedule correctly and avoid the most common reasons visits get turned away.
In-person visits at Cherokee County Jail happen on weekends only. Saturdays offer two time blocks: 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sundays run 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Appointment required: All in-person visits are appointment-only, and you must schedule at least 24 hours in advance by calling the jail.
- Call to schedule your visit - Dial (620) 429-3897 during scheduling hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Schedule at least a day ahead - Appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance, so don’t wait until the weekend.
- Confirm your appointment details before you hang up - Make sure you understand the day/time you’re approved for, since in-person visits are only allowed by appointment.
Video visits are capped at 30 minutes. You can connect through video stations in the housing units or from home using a PC through the Inmate Communication system. If you're working around a busy schedule, the at-home option is often simplest - just plan around that 30-minute limit.
In-person visits work differently. You can't just show up during weekend hours and expect to get in. Cherokee County Jail requires every in-person visit to be scheduled at least 24 hours ahead by calling the jail. Choose this option only if you can plan in advance.
- Start with the Inmate Communication system - Use the Inmate Communication (Voice / Email / Video) system as your starting point.
- Register before you try to visit - You must register to visit via the Internet.
- Follow the registration procedure - Complete the steps in the Inmate Communication registration process so your video visit attempt doesn’t get blocked.
With just 30 minutes, a little planning helps. Pick a quiet spot, be ready to start on time, and keep expectations realistic about what you can cover. Handle registration first - then you can focus on making the most of your time together.
Conduct warning: If you (the video visitor) are disruptive, act inappropriately, or aren’t properly dressed - or if the inmate becomes disruptive or acts inappropriately - staff will stop the visit and future visitation privileges may be revoked.
Assume your conversation isn't private. Cherokee County Jail states that all visits may be recorded - keep that in mind when deciding what to discuss.
What to Confirm When Call
- ✓ Confirm you’re scheduling the visit at least 24 hours in advance (appointments are required for in-person visits)
- ✓ Verify you’re calling during the scheduling window: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., at (620) 429-3897
- ✓ Ask what identification you need to bring for an in-person visit
- ✓ Ask what time you should arrive to check in for your appointment
- ✓ Ask what items you’re allowed to bring (and what you should leave in your car)
- ✓ Repeat back the appointment day and time to confirm you heard it correctly
- Stop and reset - If staff ends the visit, don’t argue or escalate; visits can be stopped for disruptive behavior, inappropriate conduct, or improper dress.
- Ask what happened and what’s allowed next time - Find out whether the issue was visitor behavior, dress, or something that happened during the visit.
- Plan for the bigger consequence - Future visitation privileges may be revoked when a visit is stopped, so treat the next attempt like a fresh start and keep conduct and dress conservative.
