Medical Care at Chesapeake Jail: Free Services, Co-Pays, and What Happens to Meds at Booking

Chesapeake Correctional Center has an on-site medical contractor providing health care around the clock. If your loved one has an urgent need or a condition that can't wait, someone is available.

Some basic screenings are provided free of charge right after booking. This includes both a physical and dental screening on admission.

Not every medical visit comes with a co-pay. Follow-ups requested by medical staff are free, and mental health screening is provided at no charge.

For documented chronic conditions, Chesapeake provides preventative and continuing treatment at no cost. The facility lists diabetes, hypertension, HIV, TB, and seizures as examples - ongoing care for these issues isn't treated like an optional sick-call request.

STD testing and TB screening are also covered at no charge.

Co Pay Services

  • Sick call
  • Doctor visit
  • Dentist visit
  • Prescriptions

Reminder: Prescriptions dispensed by the facility require a co-payment too, not just the appointment.

No money doesn't mean no care. Chesapeake states that medical treatment is never refused - if someone's account is empty, they're still seen, and a negative balance is applied to their account.

  1. Get seen by medical staff anyway - if there’s no money in the account, the facility applies a negative balance for the medical services provided.
  2. Expect repayment from future deposits - when money is deposited later, the negative balance is deducted for the medical services rendered.

Prescription medications that come in during booking aren't automatically handed out. Chesapeake requires verification before any dispensing happens.

Warning: Any medication brought in that can’t be verified, or isn’t properly labeled, is disposed of.
