How to Contact an Inmate at Facility

If you're trying to communicate with someone at a TDCJ unit, most "contact" starts with getting your visitation set up correctly. A few account rules can trip people up, so knowing them ahead of time saves a lot of frustration.

How to Contact an Inmate at Facility

To use the TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler, you have to create your own visitor account. TDCJ staff cannot create one for you, even if you're having trouble getting started. Before you sign up, choose the email address you want to stick with. Once an account is tied to an email address, the account cannot be deleted and the email address cannot be changed. A quick "temporary" email can easily turn into a long-term headache.

Once your account exists, staff can help with certain updates. TDCJ staff can assist with updating visitor information like names and addresses after the account has been created. But the first step is still on you. Create the account yourself, then reach out for help with any corrections they're able to make.

Note: The scheduler lists three visit types: Regular, Contact, and Video/Tablet. The Video/Tablet option is not the same as the Securus Video program. Remote video visits (kiosk) must be scheduled through the vendor website.

Tip: Before you travel, call the unit to confirm the inmate is assigned there, has visitation privileges, and that visitation hasn't been canceled.

How to Contact an Inmate at Facility
  1. Create your TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler account yourself. TDCJ staff cannot create visitor accounts for you.
  2. Choose your email carefully. Once your account is created, the account cannot be deleted and the email address cannot be changed.
  3. Save your login details. You will need the same account to manage scheduling going forward.
  1. Enter your information accurately when you set up the account. Pay close attention to your name and address.
  2. Ask for help only after the account exists. TDCJ staff can assist with updating visitor information such as names and addresses once your account has been created.
  1. Pick the visit type in the scheduler. The options are Regular, Contact, and Video/Tablet.
  2. Do not mix up Video/Tablet with Securus Video. The scheduler’s Video/Tablet option is not the same program.
  3. Schedule remote video (kiosk) visits through the vendor website. Eligible inmates may receive one remote video visit per month, for up to 60 minutes, and these visits must be scheduled through the vendor site.
  • Call the unit to confirm the inmate is assigned there, has visitation privileges, and that visitation has not been canceled before you travel.

Treat your account setup as permanent. You must create your own account, and once it's tied to an email address, the account cannot be deleted and the email address cannot be changed. If you run into a login problem or account issue, check with the unit to find the right point of contact before making changes. The goal is to avoid getting locked into an email you can't update later.

If something in your visitor profile needs correcting, confirm what the unit can actually update. Staff can assist with visitor information like names and addresses after your account has been created. The rules don't spell out every scenario, so ask what documentation or details they'll need from you to make the update go smoothly.

Make sure you're selecting the right type of visit. The scheduler offers Regular, Contact, and Video/Tablet, and the Video/Tablet option is not the same as the Securus Video program. If you're trying to set up a remote video visit (kiosk), double-check the vendor scheduling process before you lock in travel plans or take time off work. These visits must be scheduled through the vendor website, and eligible inmates may receive one remote video visit per month for up to 60 minutes.

  • Call the unit to confirm the inmate is assigned there, has visitation privileges, and that visitation has not been canceled before you travel.
