The 4 Types of TDCJ Visits Explained: Regular, Contact, Video/Tablet, and Remote Video

When you open the TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler, the visit type menu can be confusing. Here's what each option means, and why you may not see every type every time.

The TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler lists four visit types: Regular, Contact, Video/Tablet, and Remote Video. Those are the scheduler's built-in categories. If you're trying to figure out what you can book, match what you see on the screen to those exact names.

One common point of confusion is the "Video/Tablet" option. In the scheduler, Video/Tablet is not the same as the Securus Video program currently offered at limited units. Don't assume they're interchangeable just because both involve video.

Before you try to book anything: You must create your own TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler account (TDCJ staff cannot create visitor accounts). Once an account is created for an email address, that account cannot be deleted and the email address cannot be changed.

A Remote Video Visit is a live video visit conducted through a kiosk. If you're expecting a traditional, in-person visit, this label is your clue that you're looking at a video option instead.

  1. Choose “Remote Video” as the visit type in the place you are booking the visit.
  2. Schedule through the vendor website since Remote Video Visits must be set up there, not by showing up in person.
  3. Submit your request and keep your confirmation details so you can match your appointment time later.

Remote Video Visits are limited in both frequency and length. Eligible inmates can schedule one per month, for up to 60 minutes. This type of visit is separate from in-person visiting. It's in addition to contact or general visits for eligible inmates, not a replacement.

Quick limit check: Remote Video is a live kiosk video visit. Eligible inmates may schedule one per month for up to 60 minutes, and it's in addition to contact or general visits.

Even though the scheduler lists four visit types (Regular, Contact, Video/Tablet, and Remote Video), don't expect to see all four every time. The visit type menu is the master list, but the system only shows the options that are actually available for your specific scheduling situation.

If a visit type isn't showing up, don't fight the system. First, double-check that you're logged into your own account, that you selected the correct person, and that you're looking at the right visit type menu. If the option still isn't available, plan around the choices you do see in the scheduler.

How often you can visit depends on the inmate's custody level. For example, inmates assigned custody levels G1, J1, and J2 are eligible for one contact visit per week. If you're trying to figure out your visit frequency, the safest approach is to check what the scheduler offers for that person based on their current privileges.

  • Create your own TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler account before you try to schedule a visit.
  • Do not wait for unit staff to set up your account, TDCJ staff cannot create visitor accounts.
