Bringing Your Kids to Visit CNMCF: Age Requirements, Dress Code, and Supervision Rules
Taking kids to visit someone at Central New Mexico Correctional Facility (CNMCF) is doable, but the rules are specific. Here's what you need to know about age limits, supervision, diaper-changing procedures, dress codes, and screening before you go.
Anyone under 18 must have proper identification and be accompanied by a responsible adult relative, parent, or legal guardian. The only exception: if the minor has been verified as the inmate's legal spouse.
Note: A minor who is verified as the inmate's legal spouse is allowed to visit under that verification, even though they are under 18.
CNMCF limits each inmate to three visitors age six or older at one time. This is based on space, so availability can vary depending on what the visiting area can accommodate that day.
There's a separate cap for younger kids: up to three children age five or under per inmate, space permitting. If you're bringing multiple children, keep both limits in mind when coordinating who goes in together.
Bringing a baby? CNMCF defines an "infant" as a newborn up to 24 months old. Parents or guardians must change the infant's diaper before the visit, and the change has to happen in front of a correctional officer of the same sex as the parent.
Note: The diaper change must happen before the visit begins and must be witnessed by a same-sex correctional officer.
Once kids turn 8, CNMCF holds them to the same dress code as adults (based on gender). Plan their outfits with the same care you would for yourself.
Note: Children age 7 and younger must also follow the adult dress code by gender, but they're allowed to wear short pants as long as the shorts are no shorter than three inches above the knee.
All visitors under 18 must go through drug-detection device testing. That said, minors will never be strip searched.
- Expect the visit format to change if there’s a positive result - a positive result on a minor will result in Face-to-Face Non-Contact visiting.
- Be prepared for the visit to be denied if that option is not available - if Face-to-Face Non-Contact visiting is not available, visitation will be denied for that day.
