The 10-Person Limit at Coffield Unit — Managing the Visitor List and What to Do If You're Removed
At the Coffield Unit, each inmate can have no more than 10 names on their Visitors List. This is the official approved list of people allowed to visit during authorized hours. It includes basic contact details: names, phone numbers, and physical addresses.
For institutional inmates, changes to the Visitors List (adding or deleting names) can be requested once every six months. That means you want to choose those 10 slots carefully. Swapping someone in or out isn't something that can happen on a whim.
For state jail, ISF, and SAFP inmates, the change window is more frequent: once every 60 days. The same 10-name cap applies, but there's more flexibility to rotate visitors over time.
If you're removed from an inmate's Visitors List, you can submit a written appeal to the Director's Review Committee (DRC). This committee handles all visitor list appeals.
- Check the date on your removal notice - your appeal must be submitted within 14 days of the date on the written notice of removal.
- Write your appeal - the appeal has to be in writing.
- Mail it to the DRC - send your written appeal to: Director’s Review Committee (DRC), PO Box 99, Huntsville, TX 77342.
Note: The Director's Review Committee (DRC) has final authority over visitor list removal appeals. If you plan to appeal, watch the 14-day deadline closely. Missing it is easy to do and nearly impossible to fix.
Practical Tips
- ✓ Treat the 10 slots like a short roster: prioritize the people who are most likely to visit consistently.
- ✓ If your loved one is an institutional inmate, plan ahead since adds/deletes can only be requested once every six months.
- ✓ If your loved one is in state jail, ISF, or SAFP, use the once-every-60-days change window to rotate visitors if your family is larger than 10.
- ✓ Keep contact details current (names, phone numbers, physical addresses) so the Visitors List information stays accurate.
Before you make the trip, call the unit to confirm the visitation schedule and check that visitation hasn't been canceled. Even if you've visited before, a quick call can save you a long drive for a visit that can't happen.
