Sending Money to Someone at Coffield Unit: Who Can Deposit and How

Sending money is one of the fastest ways to help someone at Coffield Unit get basics from commissary. But TDCJ has specific trust-fund rules about who can send, what forms of payment work, and when funds become available.

Since September 1, 2020, only people on an inmate's approved visitor list can deposit to their trust account. If you're not approved to visit, your deposit can be blocked, even if you're just trying to help with essentials.

The same rule allows deposits from anyone on the inmate's Inmate Telephone List. So if you're an approved phone contact but not on the visitor list, you can still send money.

Accepted Methods and Not Accepted

  • ✓ Monthly checking account debit (ACH) options (as listed in TDCJ trust fund deposit options)
  • ✓ eCommDirect (Texas.gov) deposit option
  • ✓ Other electronic deposit services listed in TDCJ trust fund deposit options (for example Access Corrections, ACE, JPay, TouchPay)

Cash: Cash is not accepted for trust fund deposits and will be returned to the sender.

Personal checks: Personal checks are not accepted for trust fund deposits and will be returned to the sender.

Deposits of $500.00 or more are held for 14 days before the inmate can access the money. Plan ahead if you're sending a larger amount.

Certain check types also trigger a 14-day hold, regardless of the amount. Insurance, company, payroll, estate, and similar disbursement checks all fall under this rule.

Using eCommDirect to add money comes with a fee: $2.50 plus 2.25% of the deposit amount.

eCommDirect charges $3.75 for purchases.

Doing a deposit and purchase in the same session? The combined fee is $3.75 plus 2.25% of the deposit amount.

New inmates and eCommDirect purchases: Newly received inmates are not eligible to receive eCommDirect purchases until the next calendar quarter.
