The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) manages money for people in custody through an inmate account system. When you deposit funds for someone at Colorado State Penitentiary, the money goes into that account. They can use it while incarcerated, and if they transfer to another CDOC facility, the balance moves with them.

Most families add money so their loved one can buy canteen items. At CDOC, that includes phone time, stamps and writing materials, food, clothing, and hygiene products.

Good news: deposits are tied to the person's inmate account, not a specific prison building. If your loved one gets transferred within CDOC, their funds move with them.

Accepted Methods

  • Send money online using a credit or debit card
  • Send money over the phone using a credit or debit card
  • Deposit cash in person at designated locations throughout the country

Stick to the approved electronic methods. CDOC accepts card payments online or by phone, plus cash deposits at designated locations.

Timing is usually quick. Money sent before 4:00 p.m. Mountain Time is typically available to the inmate the next day.

That said, give yourself a buffer. CDOC recommends allowing 2 to 3 days for processing, especially if your loved one needs the funds for a canteen order.

Do not mail money: Money orders and cash sent by mail are not accepted.

Be aware that the full amount you send may not all be spendable. CDOC is required by law to withhold at least 20% of any deposit toward court-ordered fines, fees, restitution, or child support owed by the incarcerated person.
