How to Apply for a Ride-Along with Columbia County Sheriff's Office

If you're under 18, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office only allows participation through a school or youth law-enforcement program. Your program director needs to write a recommendation letter, which you'll include with your completed application packet. Even with that letter, every minor's ride-along still requires approval from the Sheriff or the Sheriff's designee.

The waiver is not just a formality. By signing it, you agree to waive, release, and discharge liability claims for injuries, damages, or losses connected to your participation. This release covers Columbia County, the State of Florida, and the county's elected or appointed officials, officers, agents, and employees.

Once your application is approved, it gets assigned to a patrol deputy. You can request a specific deputy, but the Sheriff has final say on that assignment. After the deputy is assigned, they'll reach out to schedule your date and time.

Plan for a full shift. The ride-along lasts approximately eight hours.

The Waiver, Release and Indemnification is a legal agreement.
