What to Expect When You Arrive for a Florida DOC Visit: ID Checks, Searches, and Processing Times

Your first Florida DOC visit can feel stressful, mostly because you have to clear a few checkpoints before you ever reach the visiting room. Here's what to expect: applications, ID checks, searches, and the processing cutoff times that can end entry before the posted visiting hours.

Anyone 12 or older who wants to visit must complete the Florida DOC visitation application form. This is separate from the ID requirement at the door, and it catches families off guard when a child is old enough to count as an applicant.

At the facility, visitors 16 or older must present a valid photo identification to enter the visiting area. If you're driving a long distance, double-check that you actually have your ID before you leave. Staff treat it as a basic admission requirement, and there's no workaround if you forget it.

Expect screening before you're admitted. All visitors and their belongings must go through a search before entering the institution.

Warning: Refusing a search is grounds for denial of the visit and any future visits. If you're not comfortable with the search requirement, it's better to turn back before check-in.

Normal visiting hours are typically 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays, and 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM on weekdays (Central time). Schedules vary by institution, so treat these as the standard window and confirm the details for the specific facility you're visiting.

"Processing" is the entry procedure before you reach the visiting area: the security screening, ID check, and search of you and your belongings. Processing begins at 8:15 AM (7:15 AM Central), and no visitors are processed after 2:00 PM (1:00 PM Central), even if visiting hours extend later that day.

Plan ahead: The processing cutoff can end entry before the posted visiting hours are over. If you arrive close to the cutoff, you can miss the visit entirely, even though visiting time remains on the clock.

Practical Arrival Tips

  • If you are 16 or older, bring a valid photo ID to enter the visiting area.
  • Be ready to submit to a search of your person and possessions before admission. Refusing can get the visit denied and can affect future visits.
  • Arrive early enough to get through entry processing before the cutoff (processing starts at 8:15 AM (7:15 AM Central) and stops after 2:00 PM (1:00 PM Central)).
