How to get approved to visit someone in Connecticut DOC (what to expect and timelines)
Getting approved to visit someone in Connecticut DOC takes time, and the wait can be frustrating. Here's how the approval process works, how long it typically takes, and what you can do—including requesting a courtesy visit—while you wait.
Before visiting someone in Connecticut DOC, you must be on their approved visiting list. The DOC's Visiting FAQ explains the full process, but the bottom line: don't book travel until you're sure you've been approved and the person you're visiting has active visiting privileges.
The process starts with your loved one. They need to give their assigned counselor your name and address as a potential visitor. Missing or incomplete information stalls everything - so double-check that they have your correct legal name and current mailing address.
Once the counselor has your information, they'll mail you a Visiting Application form. You won't download this yourself - the paperwork comes to you after your loved one submits your details.
Expect the approval process to take about two to three weeks. That covers getting the application, completing it, mailing it back, and waiting for review. If you're coordinating around work, childcare, or travel, factor in that 2–3 week timeline.
Can't wait a few weeks? There may be a short-term option. Wardens can approve a one-time courtesy visit before your application clears - for up to two adult visitors (18+) from the inmate's immediate family. "Immediate family" includes spouses, parents, children, siblings, grandparents, and grandchildren, including step or foster relationships.
Step3 Day of Visit
- ✓ Arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled visit so you can check in; if you’re late, the visit may be shortened or canceled.
- ✓ Bring valid photo identification; you’ll need it to enter the facility.
Keep your group small. Connecticut DOC limits in-person visits to two visitors total - children count toward that number. If more people want to visit, you'll need to take turns rather than coming all at once.
Plan for a short visit. In-person visits are currently capped at 30 minutes (until further notice) to allow time for disinfecting between sessions. Arriving late cuts into an already tight window, so be on time.
No visits on state-observed holidays. That includes New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Visiting schedules vary by facility, so check the current schedule before you go - especially around long weekends.
Quick Checklist
- ✓ Confirm you’re on the inmate’s approved visiting list before making the trip.
- ✓ Bring a valid photo ID.
- ✓ Arrive at least 15 minutes early so check-in doesn’t shorten or cancel the visit.
