Getting on the Approved Visitor List at G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility

First, find out if you're already on the prisoner's Approved Visitor List. If you are, you can request a video visit once G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility has online scheduling available. Not on the list yet? You'll need to complete the MDOC application process first (covered below). Once approved, come back to the scheduling steps.

Video visits are 20 minutes long and cost $3.20 per session. You can book visits 48 hours to 7 days in advance - no earlier, no later. Payment is required upfront when you schedule, so have your payment method ready.

Not on an Approved Visitor List? Start with the Michigan Department of Corrections "Visiting a Prisoner" page. That's the official starting point for the application process. Once your application is accepted, you'll be able to request video visits when the facility's online scheduling opens.

  1. Create your GTL Visitor account - set up your account on the GTL Visitor website.
  2. Request the prisoner at their assigned facility - inside GTL, submit the request to visit the prisoner where they’re currently housed.
  3. Wait for GTL approval - you’ll need to be approved on the GTL site before you can move forward.
  4. Request a scheduled video visit - once GTL approves you, you can request a scheduled video visit for prisoners at that facility.

Note: MDOC approval and GTL approval are separate steps. You need both - plus the facility must have online scheduling active - before you can request a video visit.

Getting on the Approved Visitor List at G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility

After applying through MDOC, you wait for approval. Once you're on the Approved Visitor List and the facility has online scheduling available, you can start the video visit process. Here's how it works: create a GTL Visitor account, request the prisoner at their assigned facility, and wait for GTL to approve you. After that, you can schedule video visits.

  • Schedule within the allowed window: no more than 7 days ahead, and not after 48 hours
  • Plan for the cost: $3.20 for a scheduled 20-minute video visit
  • Be ready to pay up front: the person who schedules the visit must pay in advance

Before submitting anything, confirm you're following the current MDOC process for becoming an approved visitor at Cotton. If you spot OTIS errors, email correctionsinfo@michigan.gov. For technical problems, use mdocwebmaster@michigan.gov. MDOC's central mailing address is Grandview Plaza, 206 E. Michigan Ave., P.O. Box 30003, Lansing, MI 48909. Contact hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST.
