Visiting Hours & Time Limits at Cotulla Unit: What to Expect

Regular visiting hours at TDCJ units, including Cotulla, run Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. That said, don't assume the schedule will hold if you're traveling any distance. Call the unit before you leave to confirm the person you're visiting is assigned to Cotulla and has visitation privileges. Also verify that visitation hasn't been canceled - even eligible inmates can't receive visitors on canceled days.

Heads up: Confirm visitation hasn't been canceled before you travel. Canceled days mean no visitors - even for eligible inmates.

A regular visiting period is two hours long. The clock starts when both the inmate and the visitor(s) are present, so your actual face-to-face time depends on how quickly everyone is processed and brought to the visiting area.

Tip: Arrive early so check-in and movement time don’t eat into your two-hour visit window.

Visit frequency depends on custody level. Under the I-218 schedule, inmates classified as G1, J1, or J2 can receive one contact visit per week. Most families plan around this once-a-week rhythm. Coordinate ahead so you don't show up expecting an extra visit that isn't available.

Traveling a long way? Extended visits may be available. At the warden's discretion, visitors coming more than 250 miles one way can request visits up to four hours long.
