How to Get Approved as a Visitor at Craven Correctional: The 18-Person List and Application Process
Before you can visit someone at Craven Correctional, you need to be on their approved visitor list. That means submitting a visitor application and waiting for facility approval.
At North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC) facilities like Craven Correctional, you can't just show up and expect to visit. Your visitor application has to be approved by facility staff first. No approval, no visit - so the application is where everything starts.
You won't find the application form online or at the front office. The incarcerated person has to request blank visitor application forms from inside the facility, then mail them out to the people they want to add. If you're trying to get approved, your loved one kicks off the process by getting those forms.
Craven - like other NCDAC facilities - caps how many people can be on someone's visitor list. Each incarcerated person is allowed a maximum of 18 approved visitors total, adults and minors combined. Once those 18 slots are filled, someone usually has to come off the list before anyone new can be added.
Note: If your loved one is close to the 18-person limit, talk through priorities before any forms go out. It’s frustrating to fill out an application only to find out there isn’t room on the list.
- Ask your loved one to request the visitor application - At Craven, the incarcerated person must obtain blank visitor application forms from the facility.
- Have them mail you the blank form - They’ll send the application out to you (and anyone else they want to add) so you can complete it.
- ✓ Fill out the visitor application completely, including one application for each adult and each minor who will be visiting.
- ✓ Follow the instructions on the form carefully so it’s considered “completed” when it’s reviewed.
- ✓ Return the completed application to the prison facility where the offender is currently housed.
- ✓ Don’t plan a trip until the facility approves the application - approval by facility staff has to happen before any visit can occur.
After you've sent back your application, I recommend calling Craven to confirm your approval status before making any plans. Call again the day before your scheduled visit to check the facility's visitation status - cancellations happen, and one quick call can save you a wasted trip.
Travel tip: Before you drive in for a first visit, make sure your application has been approved and call the day before you plan to go to confirm the facility’s visitation status.
