That said, build in some cushion. CDOC recommends allowing 2–3 days for deposits to process and become available for canteen orders. This is especially true if you're sending money close to a canteen deadline or during busy periods.

Here's something that catches families off guard: the full amount you send won't always be available to spend. By law, the department withholds at least 20% of any deposit to cover court-ordered fines, fees, restitution, or child support the incarcerated person owes.

Offenders can't send, receive, or solicit EFTs from other offenders - or from their relatives or visitors - without written approval from the facility's Custody/Control manager. Incoming transfers can be investigated. If funds appear tied to bartering or come from a prohibited source, they may be confiscated and held while the facility makes a final determination.
