Why You Can't Call Your Loved One at Cumberland County Jail (And Alternatives)
Here's the most important thing to know: inmates at Cumberland County Jail can't receive incoming calls or messages. Phone access is outbound-only. You can't call the jail and ask to be connected. Your loved one has to call you. When they do, you'll hear a recorded message identifying the call as coming from an inmate at the Cumberland County Detention Center. Follow the prompts to accept - and depending on the call type, you may be accepting the charges too.
Note: Calls are monitored and recorded, and phone access can be restricted for disciplinary reasons. If your loved one suddenly stops calling, loss of phone privileges may be part of the reason.
Right after arrest, the booking area has phones available for free local calls. This is often your loved one's first chance to let you know where they are. Long-distance calls work differently - they're collect calls. That means you (or whoever answers) accept and pay for the call.
- ✓ Cell phones can’t receive collect calls from the jail
- ✓ Business phone lines can’t receive collect calls from the jail
- ✓ Hospitals can’t receive collect calls from the jail
- ✓ Many commercial phone numbers can’t receive collect calls from the jail
- ✓ Numbers that are blocked from receiving collect calls won’t work
After booking, if your loved one remains in custody, they’ll be assigned to a housing unit. Phones are available in common areas (often called “dayrooms”), so calls usually happen from shared spaces rather than from a private phone.
Calls max out at 15 minutes. You'll hear a recorded warning at 14 minutes, giving you one minute to wrap up. If you need to cover a lot - kids, court dates, bills - get the urgent stuff out early.
Keep privacy in mind too. All inmate calls at Cumberland County Jail are monitored and recorded, so assume anything you say could be listened to later. Stick to support, logistics, and what they need from you on the outside.

- ✓ Use a phone number that can accept collect calls (cell numbers generally won’t work)
- ✓ Avoid business lines, hospital numbers, and other commercial numbers for collect calls
- ✓ Make sure your number isn’t blocked from receiving collect calls
- Plan for that first booking-area call - The jail’s booking-area phones are set up for free local calls, so be ready to answer if you’re local and you think they may be trying to reach you.
- Understand where calls happen after booking - Once they’re in a housing unit, calls are placed from dayroom/common-area phones, so your loved one may have to wait their turn or call when it’s quiet.
- Expect daily windows - and interruptions - Under normal conditions, inmates have access to phones for several hours each day, but phones aren’t available during meals, temporary lockdowns, and similar activities. If you miss a call, it may not mean anything is wrong - try to stay flexible about timing.
Tip: If calls suddenly stop, check whether your loved one still has phone privileges - access can be restricted for disciplinary reasons. And keep conversations appropriate, since all calls are monitored and recorded.
