What Happens to Your Loved One's Property at Dakota County Jail: Storage, Limits, and Release Procedures

At Dakota County Jail (NE), your loved one can only keep a handful of items during admission: a plain wedding band worn on a finger (no gemstones), prescription eyeglasses, and certain medical necessities - dentures, contact lenses, hearing aids, medical alert bracelets, and medically necessary handicap devices. A religious medal is allowed too, but it can't have a chain. Everything else gets taken and placed into stored property. Cash is handled separately - it goes into the safe rather than with the rest of their belongings.

S2

  • One correctional facility uniform
  • One pillow
  • One pillowcase
  • One mattress
  • One mattress cover
  • One blanket
  • One bar of soap
  • One towel
  • One tube of toothpaste
  • One toothbrush

Once property goes into storage at booking, it stays there until discharge. Dakota County Jail won't release stored items early unless the Director grants permission. If your loved one needs something released before they're discharged, they'll have to submit a written request and complete a property release form. Once both are approved, the property can be released.

During booking, your loved one will read and sign a Property Form listing everything placed into safekeeping. That signature confirms the form accurately reflects what was taken and stored.

S4

  • Up to three (3) books
  • Up to two (2) magazines
  • Up to four (4) photographs (no Polaroids)
  • Nude photos or drawings are prohibited and will be confiscated

Note: Once property is in storage, nothing gets added or removed. That's why the living-area limits on books, magazines, and photos matter - stored property is completely separate from what your loved one can keep with them day-to-day.
