Video Visits at Dallas County Jail: On-site vs. Off-site, Scheduling, and Why Visits Get Canceled
Video visits at Dallas County Jail are straightforward once you know the rules. Here's how on-site and off-site visits differ, how to schedule one, and the most common reasons visits get cut short or canceled.
Video visitation at Dallas County Jail is a privilege, not a right. The jail can deny, cancel, or end a visit for misconduct - and restrict you from future video visits entirely. Privacy is limited too: all video visits are recorded and monitored by Dallas County personnel. By joining the visit, you're consenting to that recording and monitoring.
Each session runs 20 minutes, whether you're visiting on-site or off-site. The difference is the weekly limit: on-site video visits are capped at 2 per week, while off-site visits have no weekly restriction for inmates.
Give yourself lead time. Dallas County requires all video visits - on-site and off-site - to be scheduled at least 72 hours in advance. If you're juggling work, school, or childcare, booking early helps you avoid last-minute headaches.
You must be at least 17 years old to register and present a valid, government-issued photo ID during initial registration. Visitors under 17 need a parent or guardian present during the video visit.
Treat your start time like an appointment you can't miss. Both you and the inmate must be present when the scheduled visit begins - signing in late doesn't pause the clock. Show up late, and you only get whatever time remains in that slot.
Each video visit is 20 minutes. That goes fast, so decide ahead of time what you want to talk about instead of spending the first half getting organized.
On-site visits are capped at 2 per week. Off-site visits work differently - inmates have no weekly limit on how many off-site video visits they can receive.
Late sign-ins mean a shorter conversation, not a delayed start. Both the visitor and the inmate are responsible for being present on time. Sign in late, and you only get the remaining time in that slot.
Note: All video visits are recorded and electronically monitored by Dallas County personnel. By participating, you’re consenting to that recording and monitoring.

- ✓ Don’t display contraband (including drugs, drug paraphernalia, or weapons)
- ✓ Don’t display gang signs, symbols, or colors
- ✓ Don’t engage in provocative or disruptive behavior
Dallas County enforces consequences for violations, and they escalate quickly. For nudity, provocative clothing, or tight-fitting clothing: first violation means a 30-day ban from all video visits; second violation is 60 days; third is permanent. Separately, showing up intoxicated, displaying contraband, flashing gang signs/symbols/colors, or acting provocatively or disruptively can get your visit canceled and lead to being barred from future visits.
Not every canceled visit is personal. Dallas County lists several routine reasons a visit may be rescheduled: court appearances, work assignments, lock-downs, sick call, attorney visits, and housing reassignments. Emergencies can also cause immediate cancellations.
The other major reason visits end early is conduct. Since video visitation is a privilege, Dallas County can deny, cancel, or terminate a session for misconduct - and restrict you from future visits. Signs of intoxication, contraband, gang signs/symbols/colors, or provocative or disruptive behavior can all lead to cancellation and a ban going forward.
- Schedule at least 72 hours ahead - Dallas County requires it, and it gives you time to coordinate everyone’s availability.
- Be ready at the exact start time - both you and the inmate must be present at the beginning, and late sign-ins only get the remaining time.
- ✓ Wear clothing that clearly avoids nudity, provocative styles, or tight-fitting outfits
- ✓ Don’t take pictures during the session
- ✓ Don’t appear under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- ✓ Don’t display contraband (including drugs, drug paraphernalia, or weapons)
- ✓ Don’t display gang signs, symbols, or colors
- ✓ Keep behavior calm - provocative or disruptive behavior can end the visit
Expect a tight set of rules and the process feels less frustrating. Video visits are recorded and monitored, and Dallas County treats participation as a privilege it can revoke for misconduct. Even when you do everything right, visits can still be rescheduled for court, lock-downs, attorney visits, housing changes, or emergencies. Schedule ahead and show up on time - that's your best shot at getting your full 20 minutes.
