How to Visit Facility

Visiting is straightforward once you know the rules. Start with the appointment requirement, then decide if an in-person or video visit works better for your situation.

How to Visit Facility

In-person visits are by appointment only. To set one up, call or email the prison where the person is housed and schedule your visit before you make the trip.

Each person can have one visiting session per week, lasting up to two hours. If you're juggling work, childcare, or travel, keep that weekly limit in mind so you're not caught off guard at check-in.

Video visits are available through the Getting Out Visits app. You can start an on-demand visit or schedule one for later. Just note: video visits are only available if you're on the incarcerated person's approved visitors list.

How to Visit Facility

Steps to Follow

  • Schedule your in-person visit in advance by calling or emailing the prison where the person is housed (visits are appointment-only).
  • Call the prison the day before your scheduled visit to confirm the facility’s visitation status.
  • Plan for the standard limit: no more than one visiting session per week, and no more than two hours per session (under normal circumstances).
  • If you are visiting by video, use the Getting Out Visits app and choose either on-demand or a scheduled appointment.
  • Confirm you are on the incarcerated person’s approved visitors list before you try to do a video visit.

Call the day before your visit to confirm the current visitation status. It's also worth double-checking whether the usual schedule limits apply (one session per week, up to two hours) and whether video visits are running on-demand or by appointment through the Getting Out Visits app.

Note: Know how to book your appointment (call or email the prison), and confirm you're on the approved visitors list before attempting a video visit.
