The Sheriff's Office has broad authority to deny visitors, terminate visits, or revoke visitation privileges at any time. This sets the tone for everything else on this list. Even if you believe you are following the rules, staff can still end a visit if they determine it is necessary for safety, security, or order.

Note: All non-attorney visits are recorded and electronically monitored. By participating in visitation, you are consenting to recording, monitoring, and review.

Do not try to pass anything during a visit. Passing any item is prohibited and one of the fastest ways to get a visit shut down. Visitors are subject to search, so if you bring something that is not allowed into the visitation area, there is a good chance it will be found before you ever reach the booth.

Note: The Security Support Specialist working visitation has discretion to deny or terminate a visit if they believe a rule is being broken (including contraband concerns).

Dress code violations are another common reason people get turned away. Your clothing must completely cover your body from the collar bone to mid-thigh. Footwear matters too: appropriate shoes are required and must stay on for the entire visit.

  • Transparent or translucent clothing
  • Exposed undergarments
  • Clothing with images or slogans that represent drugs, violence, nudity, or profanity

Note: The dress code list is not all-inclusive. Staff can deny specific clothing, and the Security Support Specialist can deny or terminate a visit.

Walk-up visits are not allowed. Dane County Jail requires visits to be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance through the GTL VisitMe site, and only scheduled visits are honored. Build that lead time into your plan so you are not scrambling at the last minute.

  1. Arrive on time for your scheduled start - Anyone who arrives after the scheduled start time will be denied, even if you have a good reason.
  2. Plan around the weekly limit - Each resident is allowed two 45-minute non-contact visitation slots per week, so pick your times carefully and do not assume you can “just reschedule” the same week.

Showing up under the influence of drugs or alcohol will get you denied. This is a basic safety and security rule, and you will not be able to talk your way around it once staff make that call.

A no-contact restriction means no visit. The jail will deny visitors if there is a no-contact order with the inmate, even if you traveled a long way or already have time scheduled.

Note: Visits can be denied or ended early based on staff discretion, and the Sheriff’s Office can deny visitors or terminate visits at any time.
