Visiting with Kids at Dane County Jail: Rules, Limits, and What to Know
Bringing kids to visit? You'll need a bit of extra planning. Dane County Jail limits how many children can be present at once and expects close supervision—both in the visitation area and the building lobbies.
For non-contact or video visits, up to two adult visitors can be on the approved list, but only one adult visits at a time. Kids are welcome - up to four children under 18 per visit, though only two can be present at once. Huber-sentenced residents with contact visits follow similar rules: two adult visitors and up to four children under 18 per visit. The key detail? "Up to four kids" doesn't mean you can bring all four at the same time for non-contact or video visits. Only two children can be there at once, so plan around school schedules or childcare accordingly.

Supervision isn't optional. Children under 16 must have a responsible adult watching them at all times - in the visitation area, the Public Safety Building lobby, and the City-County Building lobby. Unsupervised kids mean a canceled visit. This includes "in-between" moments like waiting in the lobby. Plan for hands-on supervision from the moment you arrive until you're back outside.

Staff control seating in the visitation area. You'll be assigned a spot - no choosing your own, even if you're hoping to sit somewhere that might help keep a child calm.
