Applying to Visit Someone at DRDC: A Complete Visiting Application Checklist
Getting approved to visit at DRDC comes down to submitting the right form, with the right ID copy, to the right place. This checklist helps you avoid the most common delays and denials.
Start by downloading the visitor application from the Colorado DOC
Required ID Document Checklist
- ✓ A copy of a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID to submit with your visiting application
- ✓ Make sure the address on your photo ID matches the address you write on your visiting application (a mismatch can lead to a denial)
Once you're approved and on the active visitor list, Colorado DOC runs a background check on you every year. They're checking for active warrants, detainers, or unresolved criminal cases. If something changes on your end, it can affect your visiting status - so keep your information accurate when you apply.
Note: If you go a full year without visiting, you'll be automatically deactivated from the visiting list and will need to reapply.
- Plan to stay “active” once you’re approved - active visitors are subject to a yearly background check for warrants, detainers, or unresolved cases.
- Watch the one-year mark - if you go a full year without visiting, you can be deactivated from the visiting list.
- Reapply if you’ve been deactivated - submit a new visiting application again, including the required copy of your valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID with a matching address.
Traveling a long distance or visiting infrequently? DRDC may require a Special Visitation Application. Complete that form and submit it to the location listed in the facility-specific instructions on DRDC's page.
- ✓ List any minor children on the Visitor Application of the legal guardian (or the immediate family member) who will accompany them
- ✓ Submit a copy of the child’s birth certificate, or a copy of an adoption/guardianship order, with the application
DRDC accepts applications by mail or email. Mail your completed application to: Attention: Visiting Department, Denver Reception and Diagnostic Center, P.O. Box 392004, Denver, CO 80239. Or email it to doc_drdc_visiting@state.co.us.
Tip: If you’re submitting a Special Visitation Application, follow the facility-specific submission location listed for that process, and double-check you’re sending it to the correct DRDC contact.
