Getting Approved to Visit DRDC: Application Steps, Background Checks, and Special Visits
Getting approved to visit DRDC takes some prep, but it's straightforward once you know what's expected. Here's how to submit your application, schedule appointments, and handle background checks or special-visit requests.
DRDC requires visiting appointments. Call (303) 307-2362 or email doc_drdc_visiting@state.co.us to schedule one. For the application itself, you can mail it to the Visiting Department at P.O. Box 392004, Denver, CO 80239, or email it to doc_drdc_visiting@state.co.us.
- ✓ Schedule your appointment during DRDC’s published scheduling hours: Monday–Thursday 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m.
- ✓ Make your appointment within the allowed window - appointments can’t be made more than seven days in advance.
Reminder: Bring your actual, physical photo ID for check-in. Photocopies and digital IDs aren’t accepted.
Include a copy of your valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID with your application. Make sure the address on your ID matches what you put on the application - mismatched addresses can get your application denied.
Don't get turned away at the door: You'll still need to show your original physical photo ID at check-in. Photocopies and digital IDs won't work.
Once you're approved, Colorado DOC runs an automatic background check every year - DRDC included. They're checking for active warrants, detainers, or unresolved criminal cases.
Go a full year without visiting? You'll be automatically removed from the visiting list. To visit again, you'll need to submit a new application.
DRDC offers Contact, Non-Contact, Special Visiting, and Video Visiting. Special visits are typically for people who visit infrequently or travel long distances. Fill out a Special Visitation Application and submit it to the location listed on the facility's page.
