Visiting Rules at DRDC: Dress Code, Prohibited Items, Physical Contact, and When Visits Are Ended
Visiting at DRDC is straightforward if you know the rules — and they're strictly enforced. Before you go, get familiar with four things that can end your visit early: the dress code, prohibited items, physical contact limits, and keeping kids supervised.
You're expected to know and follow the Colorado Department of Corrections visiting rules in Administrative Regulation 300-01. Break them, and your visit can be cut short - or your visiting privileges terminated entirely. Repeat violations can lead to longer suspensions after an administrative review.
Dress
- ✓ Upper-body clothing must keep you fully covered - no exposed cleavage line, back, or midriff while standing, sitting, or bending.
- ✓ Thin (spaghetti strap) tops aren’t allowed.
- ✓ Pants must be worn as intended (no sagging), and pant legs/skirts/dresses must be no shorter than the top of the knee while standing.
- ✓ Don’t wear clothing that is solid gray, solid green, solid orange, solid white, solid yellow, camouflage, resembles offender attire, or includes adornments that could be used as a weapon.
Keep what you bring simple. Cell phones, tablets, smart glasses, pagers, and anything else that can transmit or receive signals count as contraband at DRDC unless the DOC executive director has specifically authorized them. Tobacco is also banned - cigarettes, tobacco products, substitutes, vaping products, e-cigarettes, and vaping liquid aren't allowed inside.
Note: Food purchased or made outside the facility can’t be brought into visiting areas, except baby food. Other exceptions may be approved by the administrative head or allowed as a disability accommodation.
CDOC rules allow limited physical contact. A short embrace and a brief closed-mouth kiss are typically permitted at the start and end of each visit. During the visit, hand-holding is allowed.
Note: Breastfeeding is only allowed in the designated area identified in the facility’s procedures.
Bringing kids? You're responsible for supervising them the entire time. If a child becomes disruptive and doesn't respond to verbal instruction, the visit will be ended.
- Follow all visiting rules (AR 300-01) - violations can lead to your visit being ended and can put your visiting privileges at risk.
- Expect the visit to be terminated if a rule is violated - staff can end the visit for visiting-rule violations.
- Wait for administrative review - after review by the administrative head, a violation may carry a suspension.
- Know the suspension timeline - 30 days for a first violation, 90 days for a second, and one year for a third.
