How to Visit Facility

As of June 1, 2023, you no longer need to be on an inmate's approved visiting list to apply for in-person visitation. You still have to meet the standard visitation requirements. The old "inmate visiting list" step just isn't what controls whether you can apply and get approved anymore.

Once approved, you schedule your visit online through the Visitation Scheduler. New to the system? Register first, then wait for approval. After that, you can pick an available date and time up to 14 days in advance.

Plan your weekends carefully. Visitors are limited to one visit per weekend. If you try to book more than that, you'll need to cancel and reschedule.

For video visitation, every visitor 18 or older must present a valid, government-issued photo ID. Make sure it's current and matches the name you used when you signed up.

Minors need to be approved to visit, and their request must be attached to an adult's application. A parent, legal guardian, or approved adult visitor has to accompany them. One more thing: minors who are not immediate family won't be approved for contact visits.

Video visitation comes in two forms: at-home video visits (using a computer, tablet, or Android smartphone) and video visits at AFOI visitor centers. Which option works best depends on your equipment and what's most convenient for your family.

Visitor applications don't last forever. They expire three years after the approval date. To avoid a gap in your visitation privileges, submit a new, updated application at least 45 days before expiration if you're in-state, or 90 days before if you're out-of-state.

Steps to Follow

  • Apply to be approved for visitation (you do not need to be on an inmate’s approved visiting list for in-person visitation approval as of June 1, 2023).
  • After you are approved, schedule your visit online using the Visitation Scheduler. You can schedule up to 14 days in advance.
  • Keep the limit in mind: a maximum of one visit per weekend.
  • If a minor is visiting, attach the minor’s request to an adult’s application and bring the minor with the required accompanying adult (parent, legal guardian, or approved adult visitor). Non-immediate-family minors will not be approved for contact visits.
  • For video visitation, every visitor age 18+ must present a valid government-issued photo ID.
  1. Choose your video option: Decide between at-home video visitation or visiting through an AFOI visitor center.
  2. Have your ID ready (18+): If you are 18 or older, you must present a valid government-issued photo ID to participate in video visitation.

Reminder: Visitor applications expire after three years. Renew at least 45 days before expiration if you're in-state, or 90 days before if you're out-of-state.

Before you make plans, confirm the details that can change or aren't covered here: how to access and sign in to the Visitation Scheduler, current visiting hours and how the facility defines "weekend," any fees or technology requirements for video visits, what documentation is needed to approve a minor (and where to submit it), and whether the one-visit-per-weekend limit has any exceptions.

  • What forms of government-issued photo ID are accepted for video visitation for visitors age 18+
  • What paperwork is needed to approve a minor, and how to attach the minor’s request to an adult application
  • How renewals are submitted and processed, especially if your 3-year approval period is nearing expiration (45 days in-state, 90 days out-of-state)
