Visiting Checklist for Louisiana Prisons: ID, Registration, Searches, Baby Items, and What Not to Bring
A smooth visit starts before you ever reach the visiting room. Use this checklist to make sure you have the right ID, understand the search process, pack infant items correctly, and leave prohibited items at home or in your vehicle.
Before you can enter the visiting area at a Louisiana state prison, you must register with staff. Build in a little extra time for this step so you're not rushing through check-in.

Every adult visitor (18 or older) must show picture identification at every visit. Louisiana prisons accept: a valid driver's license from your state of residence, a valid state photo ID card from your state of residence, a valid active-duty military photo ID, or a valid passport.
Prohibited Items

Bringing prohibited items puts your visit at risk. If contraband or other prohibited property is found on you or in your belongings, your visit may be terminated.
If you need medication during the visit, only life-saving or life-sustaining prescribed medication is permitted. Bring just the amount you need for the visit, and let staff at the visiting desk know you have medication before you enter.
Baby Items
- ✓ Four diapers
- ✓ Two jars of vacuum-sealed baby food
- ✓ Two plastic bottles of milk or juice
- ✓ One change of clothing
- ✓ One baby blanket (maximum 48 inches)
- ✓ One clear plastic bag of baby wipes
Pack infant supplies according to the rules. All permitted baby items (except the blanket) must be stored together in a single clear plastic container, like a gallon-size zip-lock bag. Everything is subject to search.
Expect to be searched. All visitors, including minors, are subject to searches of their property, vehicle, and person. Prisons may use metal detectors, ion scanning equipment, and K-9 searches as part of the process.
Warning: If you refuse to be searched, you will not be permitted to enter the facility. A visit may also be terminated if you refuse a search or if contraband is found.
If your visit is denied or cut short, it usually comes down to compliance at the door. You can be denied entry for refusing a search. Your visit may be terminated if contraband or prohibited items are found on you or in your belongings. Skipping registration can also stop your visit before it starts.
