Before Your First Visit to Dorsey Run: What to Bring, What to Wear, and Key Rules to Know

Visitors can't see someone at Dorsey Run until that person has served at least 30 days. This catches a lot of families off guard, so confirm before you make the trip. Maryland DPSCS treats visitation as a privilege and enforces rules around screening, what you can bring in, and what you can wear. Expect them to be strict.

What to Bring ID

  • A valid state-issued photo ID if you’re age 16 or older (you’ll need it at visitation check-in).

Prohibited Items

  • Cell phones
  • Electronic devices
  • Tobacco products
  • Alcohol-based beverages and alcohol-based products (hand sanitizer is available inside the facility)
  • Jewelry (including watches)

Dress Code

  • Tube tops, tank tops, and halter tops
  • See-through clothing
  • Miniskirts and mini-dresses
  • Shorts, skorts, and culottes at or above the kneecap
  • Form-fitting clothing (including leotards, spandex, and leggings)
  • Clothes that expose your midriff, side, or back
  • Tops or dresses with revealing necklines, excessive splits, or both
  • Most body piercings (tongue, ear, facial, and body piercings are included); the dress code excludes a wedding ring/band or a medical alert tag

Reminder: Wear the appropriate visitor badge visibly at all times while you’re visiting.

You'll go through security screening at the entrance. This includes consenting to the facility's protocols, which may involve a frisk search. The goal is keeping contraband out and everyone safe. Plan your outfit and empty your pockets with this in mind.

Important: If you refuse to be searched or refuse to allow a search of your possessions, you won’t be allowed to enter the facility.

Plan ahead: If you leave the visitation area to use the restroom, you won’t be allowed back into the room during that visit.
