What Happens If You Bring Contraband to Dorsey Run: Immediate and Legal Consequences

At Dorsey Run,

  • Cell phones
  • Electronic devices
  • Jewelry (including watches)
  • Tobacco products
  • Alcohol-based beverages and products

The most immediate consequence? Your visit ends. Dorsey Run's visitor code of conduct states that possessing contraband - or even attempting to bring it in - results in immediate termination of the visit. You might be turned away before you even get started, or the visit could be stopped midway through, depending on when staff discover the issue.

Note: DPSCS also warns that violating visitation rules (including video visitation rules) can lead to automatic termination of the visit and possible suspension of your visitation privileges under COMAR 12.02.16.08.

Facility consequences aside, contraband can also mean criminal charges. Maryland Criminal Law Article §§ 9-410 and 9-412 through 9-417 make it unlawful to possess, deliver, or possess with intent to deliver contraband in a place of confinement.

Penalties for a contraband conviction are steep. DPSCS warns that violators face imprisonment of 3 to 10 years, fines of $1,000 to $5,000 - or both.

Bottom line: Bringing contraband to Dorsey Run isn't just a quick way to lose a visit. It can expose you to serious criminal liability under Maryland law - years of possible incarceration and thousands in fines if convicted.
