What to Expect on the Day of a Video Conference at East Jersey State Prison
Video conferences with East Jersey State Prison are usually straightforward—just plan around the facility's hours, document rules, and the consent step that happens before the call begins.
NJDOC video conferences run 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. If you're coordinating with a court, attorney, agency, or family member, plan around those hours - don't try to squeeze something in right at the end of the day.
Start early enough to wrap up before 4:00 PM. When possible, begin your conference at least an hour before closing time. That buffer accounts for check-in, setup, and the small delays that can pop up on either end.
On the facility side, the videoconferencing post officer brings the inmate to the VTC waiting area at least 10 minutes before the scheduled start. That helps things begin on time - but be ready early on your end too, so you don't lose minutes once the connection goes live.
If documents are part of your VTC plan, know this: inmates cannot fax anything back out. Facsimile transmissions from inmates to outside agency representatives aren't permitted. You'll need another approved method for signatures or outbound paperwork.
Communications over the video link between an inmate and outside agency personnel are treated as privileged and confidential. That's the baseline expectation for everything said during the VTC.
