What Your Lawyer Needs to Know Before Visiting East Jersey State Prison
Most attorney visit problems at East Jersey State Prison come down to paperwork and timing. Share these notes with your lawyer or legal representative before they head out.
Your lawyer (or their representative) must give the housing facility Administrator at least 24 hours' notice before an attorney visit. This can be done by phone or in writing, but it needs to include four things: the attorney or representative's name, the incarcerated person's name, the attorney being represented (if someone's going on their behalf), and the requested date and time. Miss any of those details, and the visit could get delayed - or denied at the door.
Tip: Before your lawyer leaves, confirm the 24-hour notice was sent and included all four pieces: attorney/rep name, incarcerated person's name, the attorney represented, and the requested date/time.
Your lawyer or their representative will need valid ID to get in. If a representative is going instead of the attorney, have them confirm what the facility accepts beforehand. Getting turned away at check-in wastes everyone's time.
One hard stop: attorneys or representatives on any Departmental "banned" list won't be admitted. If there's any chance this applies, have the attorney verify their status early. Line up alternate counsel or a different representative if needed.
Even approved legal visits can be restricted. Contact visits may be denied if the incarcerated person is acting out, considered especially dangerous, or if the attorney or representative is seen as a security risk. When contact is denied, the facility should try to arrange a non-contact visit instead.
Plan ahead: Talk through backup options with your lawyer - like a non-contact visit or videoconference - so urgent legal work doesn't stall if contact gets restricted.
