Digital Mail at East Texas Treatment Facility: Where to Send Letters Now

Since September 6, 2023, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) has routed all personal mail - including letters, greeting cards, and photos - through a digital mail platform. This applies to every unit, East Texas Treatment Facility included. Instead of delivering paper mail directly, the processing center sorts, scans, and uploads everything to the recipient's secure tablet.

Address your envelope to the Digital Processing Center like this: Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the inmate's full first and last name plus their TDCJ number, PO Box 660400, Dallas, TX 75266-0400. Make sure the name and TDCJ number are correct - that's how staff match scanned mail to the right person.

  • Use the inmate’s exact full first and last name
  • Include the inmate’s TDCJ number
  • Send it to: Texas Department of Criminal Justice, PO Box 660400, Dallas, TX 75266-0400

Some items skip the digital process entirely. TDCJ maintains a list of exceptions that should go directly to the inmate's unit, not the Dallas PO Box. If what you're sending falls into one of those categories, use the unit's address instead.

  • Legal mail
  • Media mail
  • Books, magazines, packages, and other subscriptions from verified vendors or publishers

Note: Not sure if something qualifies as an exception? Confirm with the unit before mailing.

  1. Always include the TDCJ number - Use the incarcerated person’s full name and TDCJ number so the Digital Processing Center can route the mail correctly.
  2. Verify the sender for books and subscriptions - Books, magazines, packages, and other subscriptions must come from verified vendors or publishers and should be sent directly to the unit.
  3. Check with the unit when you’re unsure - If an item doesn’t clearly fit “personal mail” versus an exception, get the unit’s guidance before mailing.

Tip: Double-check the name and TDCJ number before sending. For subscriptions, verify the publisher is approved - small errors can delay delivery or get mail rejected.
