How Long Is a TDCJ Visit? Two-Hour Visits, Late Arrivals, and Extended Visits
TDCJ visits run on a standard two-hour clock, but your actual time together depends on when everyone checks in. Traveling a long distance? You may be able to request an extended visit, though approval isn't automatic.
Regular visiting days at TDCJ units (including the East Texas Treatment Facility) are Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. That's the unit's general visiting window. Your actual start time depends on processing and when the person you're visiting is brought to the visiting area.
Note: Before you travel, confirm the person you’re visiting is assigned to the unit and still has visitation privileges. Call the unit for final confirmation so you do not make a long trip for a visit that cannot happen.
A regular visiting period is two hours long, and that two-hour clock starts when the inmate and all visitors are present. Practically, this means late arrivals can shorten the time you actually get together. If one person in your group arrives late, or if you arrive close to the end of the visiting window, you may still be allowed in but you should expect less than a full two hours once everyone is finally present.
Traveling more than 250 miles one way? TDCJ rules allow for an extended visit at the warden's discretion. These longer visits help long-distance families make the trip worthwhile, but approval depends on whether time and space allow that day. When granted, an extended visit can last up to four hours.
Note: Extended visits are not guaranteed. Call ahead to ask how the unit handles approvals, and confirm the inmate’s unit assignment and visitation privileges when you make the request.
Practical Tips
- ✓ Confirm the inmate is assigned to the unit you plan to visit and still has visitation privileges.
- ✓ Call the unit for final confirmation before traveling.
- ✓ Ask whether an extended visit is available for 250+ miles one way, and who (warden or designee) approves it.
- ✓ Be ready to share your one-way travel distance and your expected arrival time.
- ✓ Confirm the visiting day and hours, and verify visitation has not been canceled or changed.
Arrive early. Since the two-hour clock starts when the inmate and all visitors are present, getting there with time to spare protects your visit. When you're traveling far, a late check-in can mean the difference between a full two hours together and a visit that feels rushed.
