Medical, Mental Health and Substance Services at Edgecombe YDC: What Families Should Know
When your child is committed to Edgecombe YDC, care starts with screening and continues through an individualized plan. Here's how medical, mental health, psychiatric, and substance-use services work in North Carolina youth development centers.
Health services at Edgecombe YDC are designed specifically for young people. Licensed medical staff handle the basics from day one - screening, assessments, examinations, and medical interventions when needed. Your child won't be expected to tough it out or wait indefinitely for help. There's a structured medical process in place.
What happens at commitment: Youth committed to a YDC go through a comprehensive screening and assessment that looks at developmental, educational, medical, neurocognitive, mental health, psychosocial, and relationship strengths and needs.
Mental health care is built into the intake process. Each juvenile is assigned to a licensed mental health clinician (LMHC), and that clinician develops an individualized mental health treatment plan based on needs identified during a comprehensive psychological assessment.
That plan isn't created in isolation. Assessment results get combined with other relevant information - current and historical - and Juvenile Justice staff work with parents, caregivers, and community providers to shape an individualized service plan. This plan maps out what your child needs while committed: education supports, mental health services, medical care, and treatment programming.
Most youth in YDCs receive weekly psychotherapy with their assigned LMHC. Sessions may be individual or group format, depending on what's appropriate for your child's needs and treatment plan.
Psychiatric services are available too. When needed, they work alongside therapy - so a young person can have ongoing counseling support plus psychiatric care as part of their overall treatment.
If assessments show a need, some youth participate in substance abuse education and treatment while at the YDC. These services are provided when indicated, based on what's gathered during screening and assessment.
