What to Expect in the First Month After Your Son Arrives at Edgecombe YDC

Right after your son is committed to Edgecombe Youth Development Center, he'll go through a comprehensive screening. This isn't a quick check - it covers developmental needs, education, medical concerns, neurocognitive functioning, mental health, psychosocial strengths and needs, and relationship strengths and needs. The goal is to understand where he needs support and what strengths he brings, so staff can build services around him instead of using a one-size-fits-all approach.

Note: These assessments guide what happens next - staff recommendations, services, and the goals built into his plan.

Your son is assigned to a service planning team when he arrives. This team reviews what the assessments show and turns it into a workable plan. A specific group tracks his needs and progress from day one - his case won't float from person to person.

What to Expect in the First Month After Your Son Arrives at Edgecombe YDC

Within the first month, the service planning team develops an individualized service plan. The plan draws on assessment results plus other relevant current and historical information, so it reflects his situation right now and what's already known. You'll be part of the process - Juvenile Justice staff, parents/caregivers, and community providers/stakeholders all contribute to developing it.

  • Education plan (school needs and supports)
  • Mental health services plan (counseling/behavioral health needs)
  • Medical services plan (health needs identified through screening and assessment)
  • Treatment programming plan (programs and interventions indicated by the assessments)

Timeline: The individualized service plan is developed within one month of arrival, using assessment results and input from staff, family, and community providers/stakeholders.

After that first month, the service planning team doesn't disappear. They meet at least monthly to monitor progress and adjust the plan when needed. If something isn't working - or if your son's needs change - these meetings are the built-in checkpoint for making updates, rather than waiting for a crisis.
