What happens when your son arrives at Edgecombe YDC: intake, assessments, and the first month

When your son arrives at Edgecombe Youth Center, there's no single intake interview. Instead, he goes through a comprehensive screening that covers developmental needs, education, medical concerns, neurocognitive functioning, mental health, psychosocial factors, and relationship strengths. The goal is to build a clear picture of where he's at - academically, emotionally, and medically - so the team can make informed decisions rather than guessing.

Note: These early assessments are intentionally broad. They guide placement, education planning, and treatment decisions based on your son's specific strengths and needs.

Health care starts immediately. Licensed medical staff at Edgecombe Youth Center handle screening, assessment, and examinations as part of developmentally appropriate health services. Trained professionals conduct the initial health check and determine what follow-up care is needed.

Note: Early medical screening helps staff catch immediate health needs so your son's care can begin from day one.

Those initial assessments don't just sit in a file. Staff use the results - along with other relevant current and historical information - to build an individualized service plan. You, as a parent or caregiver, are part of this process alongside Juvenile Justice staff and community providers. The plan outlines what services your son will receive during his commitment: education supports, mental health services, medical care, and treatment programming based on what the assessments show he needs.

  • Education plan
  • Mental health services plan
  • Medical services plan
  • Treatment programming (as indicated)

The first month follows a clear structure. Your son is assigned a service planning team when he arrives, and that team must develop his individualized service plan within one month. After the plan is set, the team meets at least monthly to review progress and adjust goals as needed.

  1. Get assigned a service planning team - On arrival, your son is assigned a team responsible for building and monitoring his plan.
  2. Complete the comprehensive assessments - Screening and assessment cover developmental, educational, medical, neurocognitive, mental health, psychosocial, and relationship strengths and needs.
  3. Build the individualized service plan (within one month) - Using assessment results and other relevant current and historical information, Juvenile Justice staff, parents/caregivers, and community providers/stakeholders develop a plan that can include education, mental health services, medical services, and treatment programming as indicated.
  4. Start services and track goals - The plan outlines the commitment services your son should receive and the goals the team will monitor.
  5. Attend ongoing plan reviews (at least monthly) - After the plan is developed, the team meets at least monthly to review progress and adjust the plan when needed.

  • Gather recent school information that helps explain educational needs and strengths.
  • Pull together any medical history details that could matter during medical screening and follow-up care.
  • Collect mental health information that can help staff understand current needs and supports.
  • Write down psychosocial factors you think the team should know (for example, major stressors, supports, and stability concerns).
  • Note relationship strengths and challenges (key people your son relies on, conflict patterns, and positive connections).
  • Be ready to share what you know with the people involved in service planning, since parents/caregivers are part of developing the individualized service plan.

Reminder: The more complete the information going into assessments, the easier it is for the team to build a plan that actually matches your son's needs.
