Who's on Your Son's Service Planning Team at Edgecombe YDC (and How Families Take Part)

When your son arrives at Edgecombe YDC, he’s assigned to a service planning team. That team is responsible for building an individualized service plan to meet his needs, and the plan is developed within one month of his arrival.

Who's on Your Son's Service Planning Team at Edgecombe YDC (and How Families Take Part)

Minimum Members

  • Your son (the juvenile)
  • Parent(s) or guardian
  • A court counselor from your son’s home district
  • A social worker who facilitates the team meetings
  • A licensed mental health clinician
  • A school representative

This team isn't just a list of names. It's the group that gathers the information needed to decide what supports your son will receive. The social worker runs the team meetings, while the licensed mental health clinician develops an individualized mental health treatment plan based on a comprehensive psychological assessment. The broader service plan draws on assessment results plus other relevant current and historical information - so planning reflects both what staff are observing now and what's already known about your son.

Education is part of the planning, too. A school representative sits on the service planning team, and the Juvenile Justice section operates as a local education agency - teachers are licensed by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. The school representative helps shape the education piece of your son's plan alongside everyone else.

The mental health clinician's role extends into your son's weekly routine. Most youths receive group or individual psychotherapy with their assigned licensed mental health clinician on a weekly basis. That ongoing contact is how the goals in the mental health portion of the plan get carried out over time.

You're not on the sidelines - parents or guardians are required members of the service planning team. After the initial plan is developed, the team meets at least monthly to review progress and adjust goals as needed. Regular checkpoints are built into the process.

Family participation is meant to be substantive, not symbolic. Assessment results - combined with other relevant current and historical data - are used by Juvenile Justice staff, parents/caregivers, and community providers to develop and update the individualized service plan. This shared use of information helps the plan reflect both what the facility is observing and what you and other providers know about your son.
