You'll need government-issued photo ID to get in - a driver's license or state ID works. Non-U.S. citizens without a U.S. or state government picture ID should bring a valid passport or visa instead. Staff will verify your identity at check-in.

Before you drive over: You must be on the resident’s KDOC pre-approved visitation list, and you must have a scheduled visitation appointment (through the online scheduler or the facility visitation clerk) to be admitted.

If you’re bringing a child who doesn’t have a photo ID, plan ahead. Visitors under age 16 can use a copy of an official state-issued birth certificate in place of government-issued photo identification.

Kids can't just tag along - they need to be approved on the resident's visitation list first. They must also be accompanied by an approved adult who is their parent or legal guardian. One more thing: minor children may not be allowed to visit if the resident is being managed as a sex offender. If that might apply, confirm before making the trip.

Pack light and keep your car clean. You can be searched going in or out, and certain items are treated as contraband. Cell phones and tobacco (including any tobacco-related items) aren't allowed - leave them at home or locked in your car before you enter.

Heads up: Show up with a cell phone or tobacco, and you'll hit a wall at the entrance. Leave them behind so your visit doesn't get derailed.

Even with the right ID, a visit can be denied, suspended, or cut short by the shift supervisor. The quickest ways to get turned away? Showing up under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or refusing a search. Space limitations can also affect visits, so having an appointment and arriving prepared helps you avoid a wasted trip.
