Who Needs Special Approval to Visit Placerville or Tahoe Jail (Former Inmates, Parole/Probation)
If you've been incarcerated in CDCR or you're currently on parole, PRCS, or probation, you'll need written approval before visiting at Placerville or Tahoe. Here's how the rule works and what to do next.
If you've served time in the CDCR prison system, you can't just show up for a visit. You'll need prior written approval from the Jail Commander first.
The same rule applies if you're currently on Parole, PRCS, or Probation. You'll need written approval before visiting - either from the Jail Commander or from your Parole/Probation officer. Without it, you won't get in.
There's also a timing rule: you must be out of custody for 30 days before you can visit. Released recently? Wait until that 30-day window has passed before trying to schedule a visit.
The same 30-day waiting period applies to money deposits. Previous inmates must be out of custody for 30 days before they can add funds to an inmate's account.
- Call before you go, especially for evening visits - Visiting is first-come, first-served, and the facility asks you to call ahead for evening visiting to make sure it hasn’t been cancelled for the day (Placerville: (530) 621-6000; Tahoe: (530) 573-3030).
- Ask how to submit the written approval - Since written approval is required for former CDCR inmates and for people on Parole/PRCS/Probation, ask the facility what they accept as “written approval,” who it must come from in your situation, and how to submit it so you don’t get turned away at the door.
