How to Schedule Your First Visit at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center (phone numbers, hours, and what to expect)

Elayn Hunt Correctional Center’s in-person visiting hours are seven days a week, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you need to schedule a visit or get visitation information, the visitation office phone hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Call the Visitation Department at (225) 319-4559 or (225) 319-4364 to schedule a visit or ask questions. Lines are open Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. I'd recommend calling early in the day - you're more likely to get through before things get busy.

What to Have Ready When Calling

  • The incarcerated person’s full name (and any ID/number you have for them)
  • Your full name and a callback number
  • A pen and paper to write down the date/time you’re given and any instructions
  • A quick way to confirm whether you’re already on the approved visitation list, if staff asks
  • Your ID details (type of ID and expiration date), in case you’re asked to verify them

Expect COVID-era screening when you arrive. Staff will check for symptoms and take your temperature at the entrance. Bring a face covering you can wear comfortably - you'll need to keep it on from check-in through the end of your visit.

  • Hand sanitizer should be available in the visitation areas
  • Visitation areas and transport vehicles are sanitized prior to and between visits

These procedures started when the Department of Public Safety and Corrections resumed in-person visitation on October 18, 2021. Health and safety policies can change, so confirm current screening steps when you call to schedule.

  1. Call the Visitation Department - Use (225) 319-4559 or (225) 319-4364.
  2. Call during the office phone window - Staff can be reached Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  3. Ask what needs to be fixed - If you’re not on the approved list or your visit can’t be scheduled, ask what steps you need to take next and whether there’s a process for special or urgent situations.

Note: Even with department approval, the facility can restrict visits for security reasons or space limitations. If you're turned away, ask staff what happened and how to reschedule.

Quick Checklist

  • A valid government-issued photo ID
  • A face covering you can wear for the full visit
  • A quick call before you leave (or earlier in the week) to confirm your visit details
  • Hand sanitizer (even though sanitizer should be available in visitation areas)

Louisiana's visitation policy allows visits at each institution, but facilities can adjust access based on security needs and space. Staffing issues, crowding, or lockdowns can affect your visit even when you've done everything right. Call ahead, get the details for your situation, and follow the instructions you're given. A little prep work saves a lot of frustration at the door.
