When Can Your Loved One Call? Ellis County Jail Phone Hours & the Move from Booking to Population
Waiting for that first phone call? The rules depend on where your loved one is in the process. Here's how calls work at Ellis County Jail—from the free booking call to collect-call hours once they're in general population.
During booking, inmates can make free local calls. Most people use this time for urgent basics - letting family know what happened, arranging bail, or reaching an attorney. Keep your phone close and answer calls from numbers you don't recognize.
Booking phones can also place collect calls outside the local area. If you're not nearby (or your phone service treats the call as non-local), listen for a collect-call prompt and be ready to accept the charges.
Note: Detention officers aren’t allowed to pass messages to inmates - written or verbal - for any reason. If you need to communicate, plan on doing it through calls or mailed correspondence.
Once your loved one reaches general population, they can only make collect calls on weekdays between 10:00 A.M. and 10:30 P.M. Keep your phone handy during that window so you don't miss the call.
On weekends, general-population collect calls run from 10:00 A.M. to 12:30 A.M. That later cutoff means calls may come in late at night - something to keep in mind if you're the main person answering.
After booking, all calls are collect - meaning you pay for each one you accept. That can add up fast, especially if multiple family members are trying to stay connected.
