Where to Mail Letters to Erie County Prison Inmates — Personal Mail, Legal Mail, and What Still Goes to Ash Street
Here's the key change: Erie County Prison no longer accepts personal mail at the Ash Street address. Letters sent there won't be processed the way they used to be.

All personal mail now goes through Smart Communications. Include the inmate's name and booking number on the address line. The mailing address is: Smart Communications/Erie County Prison, PO Box 9177, Seminole, FL 33775-9174.
- Write the inmate’s name and booking number - Put the full inmate name followed by the booking number (the facility’s example shows it like “Adam Smith #123456”).
- Add the Smart Communications line - Use “Smart Communications/Erie County Prison” as the destination.
- Mail it to the PO Box in Florida - PO Box 9177, Seminole, FL 33775-9174.
Your letter won't necessarily arrive as the original paper you sent. Erie County Prison prints the mail and distributes it to inmates, or scans it so inmates can view it electronically on kiosks and tablets. One exception: inmates in RHU/Segregation can't access scanned mail. If your loved one is in RHU, keep that in mind when deciding what to send.

Here's why people get confused: an older Erie County Prison memo dated July 31, 2019 listed a different address for personal mail - PO Box 951, Lebanon, MO 65536. You might still see that Missouri PO Box in older posts or saved notes.
Double-check the address: The 2019 memo lists a Lebanon, MO PO Box for personal mail, while current guidance lists Smart Communications, PO Box 9177 in Seminole, FL. Verify what’s current before you send anything.
With two different PO Boxes floating around - the older Missouri address and the current Florida one - verify the right destination before mailing anything. This is especially important for money orders or legal mail. Erie County has a phone line for questions about sending mail and money.
