Before You Drive to Estes Unit: A Pre-Visit Checklist
A little prep saves you a long, frustrating drive. Run through this checklist before heading to the Estes Unit — it'll keep you from getting turned away at the gate.
Before you hit the road, confirm the person you're visiting is still assigned to the Estes Unit. Transfers happen. The last thing you want is to arrive and find out they've been moved. Also make sure you're on the approved visitor list. Not certain? Call the unit and ask before you travel. One quick phone call can save you a wasted trip.
- Call the unit before you leave - get final confirmation that you should make the drive.
- Confirm the visit is still on - verify the unit’s visitation schedule and make sure visitation has not been canceled before you go.
Bring valid photo ID. Staff check it at check-in, so don't leave it in the car. If you're unsure whether your ID type is accepted, review the TDCJ visitation materials before you travel.
- ✓ Your valid photo ID (bring it inside for check-in)
- ✓ If you’re unsure your ID qualifies, verify it against the TDCJ list of appropriate photo identification before you go
Check your outfit before you leave home. Review the unit's clothing guidelines ahead of time and pick something that clearly fits the rules - it's the easiest way to avoid problems at the front desk.
Leave prohibited items at home. If you're not sure what's allowed, check the current list beforehand. Anything questionable should stay home or locked in your vehicle.
Note: Vehicles and visitors are subject to search by unit staff. Plan your bags and pockets with that in mind.
Skip the cash. The only money you can bring is coins - and the limit is $35.
Warning: No cell phones are allowed inside the secure perimeter. Leave your phone in the car.
