How Virtual Visits Work for Evans Inmates (And What They'll Cost in 2025)

Virtual visits at Evans are straightforward once you know the two big requirements: you must be on the inmate's approved visitation list, and you have to schedule through the GTL system. Here's the quickest way to get set up, avoid common scheduling problems, and understand what you'll actually be charged in 2025.

You can request a virtual visit with someone at Evans as long as you're on that inmate's approved visitation list. Not on the list yet? You'll need to handle that first before you can schedule anything.

  1. Create your GTL virtual visitation account by using scdoc.gtlvisitme.com/app.
  2. Have each visitor create their own account even if you plan to visit together.
  3. Use your legal name exactly as it appears on the approved visitation list. Do not use nicknames, the name must match for the visit to be approved and run smoothly.

Virtual visits work on a computer, tablet, or Android phone. The FAQ states that iPhones are not compatible (at least as of the time that FAQ was published), so if an iPhone is your only device, plan to borrow or use something else.

  • Tablet
  • Android phone
  • iPhone (not compatible per the virtual visitation FAQ at the time)

Plan ahead. Virtual visits must be scheduled at least three days in advance and no more than seven days in advance. Appointments are first-come, first-served, so if the time you want isn't available, grab another open slot.

If something comes up after you book, you have a narrow window to make changes. You can attempt to modify a scheduled virtual visit up to two days in advance, and cancel up to one day in advance.

One official source (the virtual visitation FAQs) lists the cost as a flat $10 for a 50-minute virtual visit. If you've seen that $10 figure before, that's where it comes from.

A later SCDC announcement says the rate changes effective Feb. 1, 2025 to 16 cents per minute. That drops a 50-minute visit from $10 to $8. It also means you're billed based on the actual length of the visit, even though visits are still scheduled in 50-minute time slots.

Rate check: SCDC documents list both a $10 flat fee and a Feb. 1, 2025 change to $0.16 per minute (about $8 for 50 minutes). Check the price shown when you schedule so you know which rate is actually being applied.

Treat a virtual visit like an appointment you can't be late for. Be in front of your device and ready to go 15 minutes before the visit starts.
