Getting Approved and Preparing for a Visit at FCI Beckley: Visiting Lists, Dress Code, and Allowed Contact

Before planning a trip to FCI Beckley, confirm two things: the person you want to see is actually housed there, and you're eligible to visit. In the federal system, you can only visit if the inmate has added you to their approved visiting list and the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) has cleared you. If there's been a recent transfer, verify the location first - you don't want to drive to the wrong facility.

When someone arrives at a BOP facility, they create a visiting list. This can include extended family - grandparents, aunts, uncles, in-laws, cousins. Not sure if you qualify? These categories are a good sign you can be added.

Friends and associates can be included too, but there's a cap. FCI Beckley limits inmates to 10 friends/associates on their approved list, so don't take it personally if your loved one has to prioritize.

Being "on the list" isn't just a casual okay. You must be approved before visiting, and institution officials may run background checks to decide whether you're suitable. Don't assume you can show up and sort things out at the door - wait until you're cleared before booking travel.

Dress code warning: Visitors at FCI Beckley must follow the BOP dress code. If your clothing is provocative or revealing, you can be denied visitation - when in doubt, cover up and keep it simple.

Some physical contact is allowed, but keep it brief. Handshakes, hugs, and kisses (in good taste) are typically permitted at the beginning and end of a visit. Staff can still limit contact for security reasons - mainly to prevent contraband - so expect rules to be enforced strictly.

Conjugal visits are not allowed. The BOP doesn't permit them at FCI Beckley.

Set realistic expectations about time. By law, inmates get at least four hours of visiting time per month, and many facilities offer more. But the warden can shorten visits - or limit how many people visit at once - if the visiting room gets crowded.
