Before You Visit FCI Berlin: How to Confirm an Inmate's Location

Even if someone was designated to FCI Berlin, their housing location can change. People in federal custody get transferred for program participation, medical treatment, or security reasons. Confirming the current location is the safest first step before you travel.

Tip: Check the inmate's location right before you leave - transfers happen without notice, and you don't want to arrive at the wrong facility.

The BOP Inmate Locator is the simplest way to confirm location. It covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present and shows whether someone is currently in BOP custody - and if so, which facility. Check it before building your travel plans around a visit to FCI Berlin.

  • Use the required BOP register number format: five digits, a hyphen, then three digits (#####-###).

If the locator shows "Released" or "Not in BOP Custody" with no facility listed, that's your answer: they're no longer in BOP custody. This doesn't always mean they're completely done with the justice system - they could be in another correctional system, or on parole or supervised release.

When you pull up a result, focus on two things: custody status and the facility location field. If a facility is listed, use that as your destination - not an older designation you heard about before. If the result says "Released" or "Not in BOP Custody" with no facility shown, don't assume you can still visit at FCI Berlin. There's no BOP facility holding them under that status.

Note: Release dates in the BOP Inmate Locator may be outdated - sentences are being reviewed and recalculated under the First Step Act. Check back periodically, especially as your visit date gets close.

Need to confirm operational details at FCI Berlin - things that affect whether your trip will work? Start with the facility's web page. The BOP directs facility-specific questions there, and it's the right place to check how the institution is currently running.

For general questions about information on the BOP website, contact the BOP Central Office: Federal Bureau of Prisons, 320 First St., NW, Washington, DC 20534; phone (202) 307-3198. If you're following up more than once, keep notes organized so you can clearly explain what you already checked and what you were told.

  • Date and time you called or wrote
  • Name and role/title of the person you spoke with (if provided)
  • A short summary of what they told you
