What You Can and Can't Bring to FCI Berlin: A Visitor Checklist
Visiting FCI Berlin goes smoother when you plan ahead for security screening. This checklist helps you avoid bringing items that could get you delayed or turned away — and shows you how to handle medications at the entrance.
The moment you step onto Bureau of Prisons grounds - or even attempt to - you're consenting to a search under Bureau policy and federal regulations (28 C.F.R. Part 511). Staff can screen you and anything you bring as part of standard entry procedures. Arrive with as little as possible, and assume everything on you may be inspected.
Note: Setting foot on Bureau grounds counts as consent to searches of your person and belongings. Plan your pockets, bags, and car accordingly.
Prohibited Items
- ✓ Cameras of any type
- ✓ Recording equipment
- ✓ Telephones
- ✓ Radios
- ✓ Pagers
- ✓ Electronic devices
These items are prohibited because they can interfere with safety, security, and facility operations. Leave them at home. If you drove, secure anything prohibited in your car before approaching the entry area - you don't want to be sorting through your bag while staff are screening visitors.
Bringing medication? Be ready to declare it. The visitor form asks you to list all medications you're carrying, and you'll need to leave them at the entry area before your visit.
- Bring only what you truly need - if you can safely leave non-essential medications at home, do that.
- List every medication you’re carrying - write them all on the visitor form as required.
- Present them at the entry area - expect to leave the medications there when you arrive.
- Follow staff instructions for getting them back - procedures at the entrance are staff-directed, so ask if you’re unsure when you can retrieve them.
Answer the visitor form truthfully. The BP‑A0224 warning is clear: false statements can lead to fines and imprisonment under 18 U.S.C. § 1001.
If a search request makes you uncomfortable - or you're told you can't enter because of something you brought - stay calm. Ask what your options are. You can request to speak with visiting-room staff or a supervisor to clarify requirements and find out if there's a way to secure the item and continue. Rules and enforcement vary by location and situation, so getting direction from on-site staff is the fastest way to avoid misunderstandings.
Tip: For FCI Berlin operational questions - including current visiting rules - check the facility's own web page, not the BOP Central Office contact line.
